He has been the Director of the Orthopaedic Programme for People with Disabilities of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Afghanistan, where he has been working since 1990. This programme has combined the physical rehabilitation of disabled people with socio-economic inclusion. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize (2010), was awarded the Henry Dunant Medal (2013), the Nansen Refugee Award Asia (2019) and the Afghan Honorary Citizenship (2019).
