WEDUT (Women, Education, Training) - The Right to Study

Afghanistan, Kabul. 2021-2023. Direct beneficiaries: 330 women. Indirect beneficiaries: around 1,900 people (family members of the women involved in the project).

When the Taliban regained power in August 2021, NOVE had to close part of its projects aimed at female education and training. By negotiating with the Taliban authorities, it managed to implement the following free activities for women and girls:

1. Continuation of literacy courses. In Afghanistan 70% of women over 15 are illiterate. The courses to teach women to read and write, carried out by NOVE without interruption since 2018, continued until December when the Taliban regime also prohibited female literacy.
2. Informal education for high school students. The ban on playing sports, walking in parks, socializing with peers, going to school and graduating has destroyed the dreams and hopes of many Afghan girls, reducing them to a state of serious depression. NOVE has organized activities for them that allow them to continue their studies in an informal way, also giving them the opportunity to socialize with other girls.
3. Start university studies. NOVE financed courses to prepare girls for entrance exams to state universities, until in December 2022 a Taliban edict prohibited women from accessing any type of university.
4. Continuation of English courses. NOVE continues to offer English courses to allow women to reach an advanced level of knowledge of the language, obtain the TOEFL certificate and thus have access to universities and online jobs .
