Women’s entrepreneurship and creative recycling

Afghanistan is currently facing one of the worst environmental crises in its recent history. In Kabul alone, tons of plastic waste are produced every day, with serious consequences for public health and the environment.

In response to the lack of organised recycling systems and the increasing environmental degradation, we have launched the Renew & Restart project to address plastic pollution as an opportunity for microenterprise and socio-economic empowerment for the most vulnerable women.

Through hands-on training in creative recycling techniques and entrepreneurial education, 250 women take part in learning and mentoring pathways focused on producing and marketing handcrafted goods.

The project focuses on creating jewellery from recycled plastic materials, beads resembling the traditional glass ones from Herat, plastic-based fabrics, and decorative items such as vases. All products will be made using more than 60% recycled plastic, helping to maximise profit margins thanks to low production costs.

The beneficiaries were selected on a socio-economic vulnerability basis, including household poverty, number of dependents, presence of malnourished children, and, most importantly, personal motivation to establish an independent business.

Renew & Restart aligns with NOVE’s mission to promote women’s empowerment and economic resilience, fostering innovative and sustainable local development models that generate a positive impact on both communities and the environment.
